The "Auburn" Fire Series In blog entry number one, we talked about moving our back to the pistol look. As I stated, this turned about to be a great move for us. In the next couple of days, I plan to get up some clips of Veer out of the Pistol which I wrote about in that entry. But maybe our best addition this year was our "fire" series. What we were looking for and what we actually ended up doing were two different things. We wanted to add a "fire" series, which for us would be a formation completely different than our normal sets, with a few base plays, that we would run after a big play or as a change of pace. In my search for such a series, I came across the video below. As you can see we liked what the backfield action did to the defense forcing them to stand still and "find" the ball. I teach full time. Football season as we all know doesn't ever really ends. I am active at church where I do sound, teach a 20 somethings net, and teach a Dave Ramsey net. I am the FCA Huddle leader at Sikeston Junior High. I umpire in the spring to earn extra money since teaching pays so well. I have no "Margin" in my life in too many areas. For this blog and this series we are going to use this definition of Margin: the amount that is available beyond what is necessary. In this series we are going to look at margin from several different angles. For example, if you financial margin then you would have money left over at the end of the month, you would be able to give without being stretched, or you have the resources to help when a need arises. If you have margin in your schedule you have down time, time for to pray and reflect, or the ability to take off when you need too. Breaking Tendencies The first two seasons I was Offensive Coordinator at Sikeston, we would set the running back to the right or the left of the QB. On many of our plays we would also use jet motion. The result was that the defense could get tendencies based on our back alignment and motion. Teams begin to use automatics to take away our base plays. On the jet motion for instance, they would blitz play side off the edge to stop our Fly Sweep and the backside B gap out number our zone scheme when we ran Zone away from fly. This past season we made a decision to set our back in a Pistol alignment to help us become a balanced offense by alignment. While we still used a great deal of motion, we tried to make sure the motion did not always take the defense to the play. With the Pistol alignment and using more option, we think we succeeded in breaking tendencies and forcing defenses to play us more honest. I was recently blessed to have my first article published in the November issue of Gridiron Strategies. A link to the article, "The Perfect High School Offense", can be found at the link below on scribd.com. I wrote the article two years ago after my first season at Sikeston. That season we finished with a 5-5 record, but that was a big improvement considering that Sikeston had royally struggled for several seasons. In the article I reflected on our scheme. I tried to put into words what we ran, why we ran it, and how we had evolved to that point. It was one of those things you do and forget about, but thanks to the wonders of the internet, Gridiron contacted me and asked if they could print the article.
