Acts 2New King James Version (NKJV)

Coming of the Holy Spirit

2 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord[a] in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Today, as we continue to look at the book of Acts focusing on the concept of ONE. We see a second time in the Book of acts we see the phrase ONE accord. And not only were they in ONE accord, they were also gathered in ONE place. In verse two the verse starts with the phrase, “and suddenly”. When the disciples where gathered in ONE place, with ONE purpose, with love for ONE another, with their eyes on the ONE who is Lord, what happened was that suddenly God showed up. Not only did He showed up, but He showed out. When was the last time you were in a church when a rushing mighty wind filled the place and divided tongues as of fire came on everyone?

Both individually and corporately we need some “and suddenly” moments. Moments when God shows up and shows out. But why do we not see it today? Why would God show up and place his glory and power on group of people who are full of doubt, self-reliant, and divided. We have this crazy tendency to read the Bible and see moments like the one described above, knowing that we are not seeing things like this in our church and lives, and say to ourselves what is wrong with God, has He left us.? There is nothing wrong with God or His Holy Spirit. He is still with us, but the problem is us! Remember, when Peter got arrested, the church got together and prayed as ONE, and what happened, God showed up. This weekend, I am going to preach on Hezekiah, when the Assyrians surrounded Jerusalem, Hezekiah declares to the people of Israel that we are going to stand as ONE and trust God for deliverance and what happened, God showed up.

I know if God has done it once, He can do it again. I know if God did it for someone else, He can do it for me. If God poured out His glory and power once, He can pour it out again. He does not always do things the same way, He is original, but I think He is in the wings waiting to do it again. I think the problem is His people have settled. His people are busy going about their lives. His people are afraid of looking like a fool if God doesn’t show up.

So what does this have to do with me you ask? The power of ONE Can become contagious. If ONE person chooses unity, it can start a chain reaction. If ONE person seeks His face, others will join. Like Paul told Timothy, I don’t care what others are doing, you stay the course. God is looking for ONE who will pray with crazy faith, believe with crazy faith, and love with crazy faith! God you have our permission to show up and do it again!

The Upper Room Prayer Meeting

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication,[b] with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
We ended up on Friday with Point #2 Power. After Jesus was taken up to heaven the apostles returned to Jerusalem and entered the upper room as Jesus had instructed them, to wait on the Power that Jesus had instructed them to go and wait on. When and why did the power come. It came when they were in the upper room praying “with one accord”.

Point #3 One

There is so many ways you can play that word in this case. First, our Power comes from the ONE who is above. Or we could say that God and the Holy Spirit are ONE, meaning that literally that God lives inside of us through the Holy Spirit! But that is not the direction I am going this morning. Because, God and His Holy Spirit are not the problem. They are the everlasting constant, it is us that needs to get the concept of ONE. When we get to “ONE” accord, then the church will experience great revival! A divided world must see a united church! The question is what did the church of Acts have that made them so successful? More specifically, with so many more advantages on the outside looking in, how is the American church not seeing the powerful movement we see in the church acts. The answer is ONE. They were ONE with the Holy Spirit and they ONE with each other. A mighty crazy kind of ONE that drew the world to them. We are going to explore this kind of ONE over the next few weeks as we continue to look at the book of Acts, but I don’t want to end a devotional without a practical take away.

What does ONE mean for us. What can we do as individuals to bring about this oneness? I think it starts with the Holy Spirit, we still need to be ONE with the Holy Spirit, like in the book of Acts. Me included, I know that is not the case. Mark lives like Mark wants to. My guess is you do to. Do I believe there are times I led by the Spirit, yes, but I am not ONE with the Spirit! Paul was one with the Spirit, Stephen was one with the Spirit, Peter became one with the Spirit. Did that mean that they became perfect, no it meant that they lived a life where every move was spirit driven. They put aside their lives and sought we he had for them. The other ONE I mentioned earlier was love for one another. For us to become in ONE accord, we must love each other. The Bible says plain and simple they will know us by our love for one another.

So how do we go about doing that? Start by being nice, the world is tired of mean Christians! Then get over yourself. Too many people in the church are flat out selfish. They act like the church exist to serve them, not that they exist to serve the church. It all goes back to HIS LOVE. When we get full of HIS LOVE, it will overflow. That is what happened in Acts, they got so in Love with Jesus, that it overflowed and dominated who they were. And out that Love flowed the oneness that we see in the book!

Acts 1:4-8
The Holy Spirit Promised

4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me[a]in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

We have always tried to figure it out. Humans philosophize and use the intelligence that God gave us as a gift to figure it all out. We are so smart yet so limited in our view of things. The disciples had walked with Jesus and heard his teachings, yet they still missed it. They ask Jesus, Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom of Israel? Such a small and narrow vision of what God wanted to do. They wanted the Earthly Kingdom of Israel to be restored, God wanted the Spiritual Kingdom of God advanced. But I don’t think it is fair for us to judge them. They after all were Israelites and they viewed the world through the lens of who they were and how they were raised. And in fairness this same group will successfully establish the church and will grow it into a dynamic, powerful, world changing church with a lot less to work with from a worldly point of view than we have.

This leads me to my next point. Jesus instructed them to wait in Jerusalem to be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. Why, because He knew them and loved them. He knew that on their own with all of their flaws and weaknesses could never do what needed to be done. And praise God, He loved them anyway, despite their flaws and weaknesses. He gives them a slight rebuke and reason for hope and in his words, I think there is a lot of wisdom for us the American Christian and Church of 2017. It is not for us to know the times or the seasons. Quit trying to figure everything out. I think one of the foundations of Christian wisdom is to understand and be content not knowing what is not for us to know! God has revealed things to us in simple and clear ways, it is those things he wants us to live in. And after the rebuke, comes the hope.

Point # 2: POWER

You shall receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Some people get very nervous when you start talking about the Holy Spirit, it is because we get convicted as Christians because we know we are walking well below where we should in terms of our relationship with the Holy Spirit. We are to walk in Power and why, to be witnesses for Jesus. Why is the church not growing and thriving? The answer is simple, we are not walking in the Power of the Holy Spirit!

Next week we will look at when the Power came down and the real secret to why the church in Acts was so much more effective than our churches today. We will also try to get real practical on how we can be a part of the solution and not part of the problem.
Before now, I will share this song which I think expresses what God desires for us to be when the Holy Spirit comes in all his fullness!

2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,

Here in Acts 1:2 we find an interesting statement. “Through the Holy Spirit”. What makes this interesting is to whom this is referring to. Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, taught his commandments to his apostles. If Jesus relied on the Holy Spirit, then who do we think we are when we live in our flesh. I was going to move on and go further in Acts today, but I think the Holy Spirit said not so fast. The next part of Acts is where Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to the new church and sent them to Jerusalem to wait on him. My point yesterday was “Experience”. Why did Jesus send them to Jerusalem, to have an “experience” with the Holy Spirit! I did a whole teaching on the Holy Spirit last year. But I sense what the Holy Spirit wants to tell you this morning, that if you want to Experience God, look no further than to the Holy Spirit who lives on the inside of you. He is saying, if Jesus relied on me, don’t you think you should too. Jesus didn’t teach out of knowledge, his wisdom, or experience he taught what the Holy Spirit directed Him to teach. When Jesus answered the Pharisees who were so smart and self-reliant they left God out of the equation, He answered them by the words of the Holy Spirit.

It is time we start living through the Holy Spirit! The Series is Simplify right. I stressed yesterday that the church of Acts did not have buildings, denominational organizations, the internet, or any other of the modern advantages we have, but they did have a life directed by the Holy Spirit! Simplify by depending on the Holy Spirt instead of the many things us Americans like to rely on. In the process we might just “Experience” life more abundantly!Pastor Coachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04626076199309076094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1600206461850161572.post-46897659296636589092017-02-16T08:56:00.000-06:002017-02-16T08:57:21.688-06:00It is Not that Complicated

As I read the book, I see a powerful, dynamic, growing church that was literally turning their Roman world upside down! Then I look back at the American church and well you know.

So what was it that made this group different? The first thing I think they had was an experience.

Point #1: Experience

Acts 1New King James Version (NKJV)
Prologue

1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

Think about what this group of small believers had just went through, and keep mind they are human. First, they were convinced they had found the Messiah, something they had been waiting for all their lives and they had ridden the highs of having Jesus on Earth. But then it all came crashing down, at least that is what is looked like on the outside. I mean Jesus was arrested in crucified and even though he told them it was coming, as in the account with Peter we see that circumstances had trumped faith and they were in the lowest of lows and I am sure they questioned everything they had believed. But then, don’t you just love when God does a “but then”, then He rose from the grave and as we see in first part of Acts above, they had just spent forty days with a risen savior! That is enough to create momentum and energy. And that to me is the first thing a lot of Christians and churches are missing. An “Experience” that creates that kind of momentum and energy!

I pray that each of you on my devotional list has had an experience with God. If not I challenge you to seek Him until you do. For many of us, it quite frankly has been to long since you have had a real experience with God. Then it is time you seek Him and change that! As the American Church in general I am going to spend the next few days in Acts looking at what they had that we are missing, but it would be a great start for God to show up in Churches all across America and that truly have a corporate experience with Him. Even though when he shows up, He has this attitude, He thinks He is God and He will want to do it His way. As humans, we don’t like to give up control and it is that control that we often miss our experience with God. Look for ways as you do through your day today to Experience God in both big and small ways. It could be as simple as stopping to watch children play.

My prayer as I close this morning is that we Experience God today and remember days past when we have Experienced God! Pastor Coachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04626076199309076094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1600206461850161572.post-40025318261272587492017-01-28T15:25:00.002-06:002017-01-28T15:25:16.759-06:00Go Tigers

It's all about the PAW.#ALLIN 🐅🐾 #Clemson pic.twitter.com/vim4k3ijKB
— Clemson Football (@ClemsonFB) January 28, 2017

We have to take the church and truly create disciples. People have to do church not just go to church. As I am praying about my future, this challenges what is next for me. Great message, hope you enjoy, Coach Jackson.

It is a basically a teaching on Covenant. Using Romans 12 as an example of how we should live out our Covenant Relationship with God and then Deuteronomy 28 to understand the blessings, promises, and curses associated with living out or failing to live out our Covenant Relationship. At its core it is a challenge for the American Christian to live out the life and advance the Kingdom of God and walk in His blessings.
Ecclesiastes 11:5 HCSB

We are reminded in Ecclesiastes that God is God and we are not. I don't know about you, but I depend a lot on myself, my abilities, my gifts and not enough on the Holy Spirit. My Pastor told me recently that I need to work on listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit and of course testing it to make that it is the Holy Spirit and not Mark's tangents. To make our lives easier, we need to figure out that we don't have everything figured out. We need to understand that we don't understand everything. We need to admit to God that we need him. That we need to admit to God that we are lost without His guidance.

All this of course is much easier said that done. Thy will be done is easy to say. Trusting God who knows and makes everything, makes sense, but is not easy to do.
I am working on hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit. I pray that as I continue to do these devotionals that I allow Holy Spirit to lead me. That I give the Holy Spirit room to say what he wants and not just good thoughts that I come across. To do this, you have to stop and listen. You have to practice humility and operate under the assumption that God knows best and that whatever happens, God is in control.

Yesterday in my Coaches Thoughts, I talked about how that Practice makes Passion. Let us all practice hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit and in the process may we develop a Passion for the Holy Spirit!
